"Scale is a wonderful thing. The side of a snowy mountain, with rocks, trees, small valleys, and steep runs cutting through uneven terrain, can at first seem almost flat, perhaps even unworthy of a second look. Until, that is, you look again... Then the scene begins to unlock treasure after treasure, story upon story.
I often think of painting in the same way. What may first appear to be simple color and shape slowly reveals layers of movement, depth, and light the longer you spend with it.
'Sage and Spruce' plays with that same sense of discovery. From a distance, the composition feels calm and unified, but as you step closer, the painting begins to open up with shifting passages of color that invite the eye to wander and explore." - Simon Bull
